James E. Petersen – Retired

Jim Petersen joined Karnopp Petersen in 1980 after practicing law in Portland for a number of years. Prior to his career in law, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force for six years as a fighter pilot.

Jim counsels individuals and businesses from a diverse client base in the areas of corporate, business and real estate law as well as in sophisticated estate planning. He has significant experience in business and personal counseling, mergers and acquisitions and commercial contracting, as well as a technical knowledge of estate and gift tax laws.

Professional & Community Activities

A Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, Jim served as State Chair from 1999 through 2004. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Oregon State Bar and Deschutes County Bar Association.

Jim has always been committed to serving the local community. In addition to being an active Rotarian, he is a past Board Chair of Cascade Healthcare Community, the parent organization that owns St. Charles Medical Center – Bend and St. Charles Medical Center – Redmond. Jim is a co-founder, past Board Chair and current Board Member of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of the Cascades, a clinic providing free medical care to the uninsured residents of Deschutes County.  Jim was selected by the Bend Chamber of Commerce as Bend’s Citizen of the year in 2004 for significant and lasting contributions to the Bend Community.
